Amnesia
Played the game Amnesia: The dark decent for about an hour and a half and I'm putting it down now so I don't have nightmares tonight. I'm serious, this game is scary. Also, it's available on steam for like 20 bucks. Anyone else playing?

AIM, and Philly
I talk with Ethan and Adam occasionally on Skype which is fun, but I should be better about saying hi than I am. But that's about the only people I still talk to. I never see anyone else on AIM and I don't spend a lot of time signed into Google chat. What services do you guys use, or should we just be better at signing on and saying hi? This sight is nice but it's hard to converse, it's great for hey look at this but talking about it in the comments section is pretty hard to do.
Second, I'm tired of studying surface slant so I'm quitting my job and finishing my master's degree over the coming school year. Amanda will be teaching at least part time so we're stuck in Rochester for the time being. But after that we're free and have a whole bunch of friends and family along the eastern seaboard, especially NYC, Philly, and DC. So we're planning to move to Philly next summer. Anyone else know where they're going to be in a years time?

2 nukes weren't enough
So apparently anime is a prime example of why 2 nukes weren't enough. Ouch, Mr. Representative, ouch. As an anime fan i take offense. Maybe a little more than an "official reprimand" is in order...

starcraft 2
So the University of Rochester runs an annual convention call SimCon for board and roleplaying games, and anime. That was this weekend, and during it the computer science students also put together a LAN party and starcraft tournament. I didn't play in the tournament, I haven't played SC in years, but I went and watched a few rounds which was fun. They had a starcraft 2 beta key up as the top prize! Also they had two beta counts playing head to head for people not in the tournament, so I got to play a few rounds of the starcraft 2 beta. The game is apparently a beta by blizzards standards, but by anyone else's it's exquisite. Anyone else excited for this game?

space 1889
I've been reading "Iron Council" by China Mieville which is modern and pretty fun steam punk, with some fantasy elements. I think so far my favorite bits have been the creatures, humans or animals augmented with iron and steam and clockwork, even other parts of animals. Anyway, it got me reading about steampunk in general and I bumped into a setting that I need to try. It's a role playing game called space 1889. Reading some reviews, apparently the rules of the game leave a little to be desired, but how cool is an ether propeller?

Stolen Descartes letter found
Back in the 1800s, some Italian mathematician stole a bunch of Descartes's letters from the Institut de France. So far, only 45 out of the 72 documents have resurfaced. Recently one of the letters was discovered in the special collections of a certain college in Pennsylvania, a place you may have heard of before...

Animal Research
So I work in a lab at the university, and while we don't work with animals there are other labs in the building that do. And one of them posted the following poster in the kitchen, which I thought was hilarious. It's the Advanced Animal Directive, like the advanced medical directive only a terrible idea. The link is here. check out the directive there, it's a pdf otherwise I'd link it directly.

1. In his laboratory, the last man on earth worked furiously. He had only a few moments left.
2. Giant cataclysms were shaking the reeling planet, destroying mankind. It was in its last days, dying...
3. The last man placed his infant babe within a small time-machine he had completed, launching it as ---
4. --- the laboratory walls caved-in upon him.
5. The time-vehicle flashed back thru the centuries, alighting in the primitive year, 1935 A. D. A passing motorist sighted the metal cylinder...
6. ...and upon investigating discovered the sleeping babe within.
7. The infant was placed in an orphanage. The first day, it playfully bent its metal bed out of shape. The astounded attendants, of course, did not realize they were caring for a child whose physical structure was millions of years advanced from their own.
8. The babe, named Clark Kent, was a physical wonder. At the age of five, when an older boy sought to bully him, Clark sent him flying thru the air.
9. Clark's colossal strength was a source of wonder and pleasure to him. He found, at twelve, that he could easily shatter the world's high jump and dash records.
10. His powers increased unbelievably. When maturity had been attained, Kent discovered he could leap over a ten story building, raise unheard-of weights, run as fast as an express train, and that nothing less than a bursting shell could penetrate his tough skin.
11. & 12. Early, Kent decided he must turn his titanic strength into channels that would benefit mankind. And so was created SUPERMAN, champion of the oppressed, the physical marvel who had sworn to devote his existence to helping those in need!

Google takes a new approach to China(!)
Wow.
In response to cyber attacks on the Gmail accounts of Chinese civil rights advocates, Google is no longer going to offer censored search in China and therefore will probably shut down google.cn entirely. I'm surprised that even Google would do this.
Update:
Triple wow. An official slap in the face to the Chinese government. (If the link is not working when you read this, it was a google.cn/images search for "tianamen square", which previously had all of the tank pictures taken out.)
Update:
It's officially a thing.
