Some of the 2000-year-old vandalism is rather prosaic:
"Aufidius was here. Goodbye"
Some are fairly sweet:
"Auge loves Allotenus"
There are a few which are eerily prescient:
"O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed that you have not already collapsed in ruin."
Others are just cruel:
"Epaphra, you are bald!"
I'm not sure this is authentic--in fact, I'm pretty sure it isn't. The amount of colloquialisms makes it iffy, the broken links make it doubtful, and the fact that the pompeiana.org domain has a different list with nothing like this makes me think it's made up.
ReplyDeleteStill, some are funny beyond the vulgarity.
Here's the list from pompeiana.org: http://www.pompeiana.org/Resources/Epigraphy/Ancient%20Graffiti%20on%20the%20walls%20of%20Pompeii.htm
